Routec electrifies its forklift fleet with TCM FHB electric trucks

Background

Routec GB Ltd is a long-established UK manufacturer supplying the leisure home, POS, and retail display sectors, producing high-quality wood and wood-composite products for customers ranging from independent businesses to major high-street and international brands. As a long-standing customer of Barek, Routec continues to invest in safer, more efficient operations across its manufacturing site.

Following a detailed site survey at Routec, we identified a strong opportunity to replace an ageing diesel forklift fleet with a modern electric TCM FHB counterbalance fleet. The move supports improved safety, lower operating costs, and a cleaner, quieter working environment—while still delivering the performance required for demanding day-to-day operations.

Improved safety with modern electric forklifts

Modern electric forklifts bring significant safety advances compared with older diesel models. The TCM FHB range is designed to give operators greater control and confidence, particularly in busy yard and warehouse environments.

Built-in safety features such as automatic braking systems, hill-hold control, and speed reduction when cornering help reduce the risk of roll-back, instability, and loss of control. These systems actively support safer operation on ramps, gradients, and tight turns—areas where traditional diesel trucks rely heavily on operator judgement alone.

Visibility is also greatly improved, with a clear, unobstructed operator view and modern mast and overhead guard design. Combined with improved ergonomics, reduced vibration, and quieter operation, this creates a more comfortable working environment that helps reduce fatigue and improve awareness throughout the shift.

Reduced emissions and cleaner operations

Switching from diesel to electric forklifts removes exhaust emissions. For Routec, this means cleaner air in and around buildings, loading bays, and pedestrian areas, as well as a quieter site overall.

The absence of engine fumes improves working conditions for operators and nearby staff, while supporting Routec’s wider environmental and sustainability goals.

Reduced downtime and lower maintenance costs

Electric forklifts typically require less routine maintenance than diesel trucks, with fewer moving parts and no engine-related servicing such as oil changes, filters, or exhaust components. This can help reduce unplanned downtime and improve overall fleet reliability, particularly when replacing older diesel equipment.

Lower operating costs and fuel savings

The end of red diesel eligibility has forced many forklift users onto higher-cost white diesel, significantly increasing fuel costs. By moving to electric trucks, Routec can reduce exposure to volatile diesel prices while also eliminating on-site fuel handling and refuelling time.

Electric forklifts offer predictable energy costs and improved efficiency, delivering meaningful long-term savings compared with running an ageing diesel fleet.

A future-ready forklift fleet for Routec

By transitioning to a modern TCM FHB electric forklift fleet, Routec is benefiting from improved safety, reduced emissions, lower operating costs, and a more comfortable working environment for operators. It’s a forward-looking investment that supports productivity today while preparing the business for a cleaner, more efficient future.
