What is a Through Examination (LOLER / PUWER)

A Thorough Examination is the name given to the mandatory inspection required by law to ensure that the mechanical parts of a lift truck are in safe working order. It is roughly equivalent to the MOT for cars.

As proud members of the CFTS Thorough Examination Organisation, we demonstrate our unwavering commitment to safety and quality in the field of forklift and materials handling equipment. This affiliation underscores our dedication to upholding the highest industry standards. CFTS, known for its rigorous inspection and certification processes, ensures that our equipment is thoroughly examined and meticulously maintained to guarantee optimal performance and safety. By adhering to CFTS guidelines, we prioritise the well-being of our clients and their operations, offering them peace of mind and a reliable partner in their material handling needs.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) states:

“Thorough examination of industrial lift trucks is required under health and safety law: LOLER 1998, which covers lifting equipment, and PUWER 1998, which deals with all other safety-related items, such as brakes, steering and tyres. Your regular inspections as part of a preventive maintenance scheme or scheduled service are not a thorough examination.”

It is crucial to ensure that your Thorough Examinations comprehensively cover both the lifting and the driving mechanisms of the truck, because not all of them do. Some examinations only cover LOLER, which could put equipment, operators and businesses at risk.

For peace of mind, it makes sense to get your Thorough Examination from a CFTS-accredited Competent Person. The CFTS mark is your guarantee that your truck will be examined carefully, and that key components such as brakes and steering will be checked along with the lifting mechanism.
